Using Blogs in the Classroom
Blogs are an excellent tool for communicating with others to share ideas and thoughts about particular subjects. Creating a blog for classroom use will allow students to share their thoughts. Some students communicate better in writing. Creating a blog in for the class allows the teacher to use the blog as an informal assessment. According to the type rubic established for given assignments, the blog may also be used as a formal assessment. Students can log into the blog to recieve assignments given by the teacher. Parents would be able to access student assignments. Questions may be posed by the teacher and student. Blogs would enhance the learning environment.

I agree that blogs are an excellent tool for communicating with others. Creating a blog for classroom use will provide opportunities for differentiation and allow you to reach all learners, especially those who communicate better through writing as you mentioned
ReplyDeleteI also think that using a blog to post assignments is a great way to let students and parents know what is expected.
What grade do you teach? That would help me to better undrestand how you plan to use blogs in your classroom because blogs can be modified and used in a variety of ways depending on the age and level of the students.
My question is about the assessment rubric you mentioned. Would it be posted on the blog as well? Also, is it one you would create or would the students help decide what should be included?
ReplyDeleteNancy the rubric is designed to let the students know exactly what is expected of them. Since blogs would be performance based objectives, the students should know what is expected and the value of the assignment. For instance, if there is a certain amount of feedback required, students need to know that, as well as how many points or how much credit would be awarded. The Florida Department of Education comes to our school on a regular basis and this is one fo the areas which we were flagged on. It helps to know the worth of assignments and what is expected.
ReplyDeleteJesse I am currently not in a classroom. I am the Reading Coach for my school. I know that the use of blogs would be great because I see them as a spin off to email accounts. I work with grades 6-12,as we are middle/high school. Differentiating instruction is the key to meeting the needs of all students. Parent involvement is a key component as well; thus keeping the parents informed is an advantage to the teacher.
ReplyDeleteI wanted desperately to use blogging for my PLC (Professional Learning Community) at school, but the sites are blocked. We were very excited with the idea and then shattered at the fact that we were not allowed to use them. Maybe someday soon the district will open that form of communication for us.
